We live day after day but we do not care about how Time works – Only in front of the mirror we feel that we have grown older. We look at the image of our face and say “I am growing older and older!”
How to look for the time mechanics, how it works and what its dimensions are!
Procedure by The Portuguese: Let's search carefully to avoid falling into illusions and fantasies. Let's evaluate items step by step. Only after a confirmation we will advance to the next item. We will use Analogy together with Geometry, making deductions and classifying them into concrete or abstract, true or false.
Then, let's go!
Time, what is exactly time? How are we going to start our search and what are the first items to be evaluated?
First proposal: to measure their length, “Past, Present and Future”.
We will start from the Present – What is its dimension, that is, how long is it?
There are many Present Times to use. For instance:
If we consider last year as the previous time, and next year as the “upcoming” future, then this year is the present time – Note that, in years, we have the past, present and future, but one year is way too long for us to feel its extension and evaluate the time.
Reducing it to months, we would have the past 30 days as the past, the upcoming 30 days as the future, and the 30-day period in which we are as the present – But, in what day of the month are we, the beginning, middle or are we next to its end? It is also too long for us to feel its largeness.
Once again, we will shorten time to a 24-hour day, but we would face the same question, are we in its first hours, in the middle or the end? Consequently, we would change to minutes, and then to seconds.
When we reach the time fraction measured in seconds, we start to feel a rational, instantaneous present, feeling that we are in the extent of the Present time - Not yet!
Let's put it in geometrical figures to feel it better.

The time of one second can be a satisfactory dimension for us humans, but for other animals it would be too long.
Example: note as Swallows fly when feeding over the top of the trees. They are in a given direction and, soon, change abruptly and then follow another line.
It looks apparently normal, but what I want to demonstrate is the state of attention and the reflex the birds have.
I am used to feeding hummingbirds and, because of that, I noticed that they fight for their territory, running behind each other, ejecting them from the region, to keep their honey, their private food, “for them”. Territorial fight.
As they fly fast, they cross narrow passages between tree branches, with quick and abrupt turns.
Then I thought - wow, if humans were to fly at such speed, we would collide at the first turn. We would not have so fast reflexes to decide before the impact.
The present time in the reflex of a hummingbird in seeing, calculating, deciding and changing, is so fast that one second for the humans is too slow for them.
Can you see the difference in attention and reflex among the animals, and in which of them should be the reference to determine the Present Time that we are searching for?
Now, Philosophy starts: If we are searching for something concrete and valid everywhere in the Universe, then we should narrow even further our Present time. The time in seconds is too slow.
Speeds relate to time cycle, machines have speed, cars are faster than horses, there are airplanes, rockets and so on.
In the conclusion of speed, Science uses light speed as the fastest possible speed in Nature. In the time span of a second, a flash light goes from Earth to the Moon. A laser, for instance.
A hummingbird could not follow such a high speed flash.
Now we are before a paradox: speed and attention, “feel” the Present time should be related, but they are not classified.
What determines the Present time sensation is in the sense of the animals, including men.
The fastest speed science could determine is that of light – The speed of a flash is 300,000 km / second or 300,000,000 meters in a second of time.
We deduce that light goes through a meter in (1/300000000) second = 0.000000003 sec.
Or, searching deeper in the infinite Micro, super fast, light goes through the extension of one Angstrom (1 Angstrom = 1 nanometer) in 0,000000000000000003 sec.
This very short time, in which light goes through one Angstrom, is not yet the end, the search for the infinite micro continues. Each new step, we have a new narrowing in the Present time, as we use more modern equipment and powerful instruments.
Now, we are where science also arrived, measuring light frequencies. A yellow light pulse is +/- 550 Angstrom, consequently, such pulse takes the result of speed in the length of an Angstrom multiplied by 550 equals 0.000000000000001650 sec.
Well, if an “ultra” fast pulse of light is measured and it is a frequency cycle - Then a cycle is the full instant of start, middle and end. It is the complete curve of sin in trigonometry, it is the only full turn around a circle corresponding to the size of a pulse.
Small cycle, pulses which are proportional to their sizes. Micro in dimension, micro in time, and so successively endlessly searching for the measurable smaller. Infinite micro. Remember that infinite means endless.
If we use such light pulse as the narrowest Present time – and that can be measured by equipment – then we have reached a conclusion and we can use the following sentence:
“Present Time is so narrow (thin) that its dimension no longer exists, it is nothing but the division between Future and Past”.
Imagine a recipient, a “glass”, half filled with oil and half with vinegar. We would see the two liquids separate within the glass. The two do not mix.
The extremely thin division, in the viscosity of the elements, can only be in the liquid itself, in the crystals of liquid is the division.
In Analogy, we could say that oil means the Future while vinegar means the Past, and there is nothing in between, only the separation, and that the distance is so thin that we can interpret as a division with Zero dimension.
This is the dimension of the Present time = Zero. It is the maximum scientifically interpreted.
I would say that the paradox of the infinite turned to micro was responded – for the first time we can say that Zero has dimensional quantity or extension, being the Division between integers, natural and fraction numbers.
